Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM) is the term given to define the process of sweeping for electronic listening devices, bugs, covert cameras and other similar eavesdropping devices; as well as the related identification of security weak points.
A TSCM inspection is a service undertaken by qualified and experienced consultants to detect the presence of electronic listening devices or hidden cameras within a particular environment. It is also a service that identifies potential security vulnerabilities that may result in an easier infiltration by espionage operatives.
A professional TSCM operation will consist of a thorough visual, electronic and physical examination of a predetermined environment and will utilise an extensive array of equipment, operated by several specialists.
A TSCM inspection is essentially looking for devices that illicitly transmit radio (or light) frequencies (wireless) as well as devices that do NOT transmit radio frequencies (hard-wired).
Examples of devices that transmit radio frequencies include wireless AM/FM/UHF bugs, GSM or mobile-based listening devices, WiFi transmitters, infrared bugs, light modulated transmitters and other similar threats.
Devices that do not transmit via radio frequencies include devices attached to power lines, hard-wired covert cameras, devices attached to accessible wiring, tape/digital recorders and/or solid state listening devices (SSD / memory cards).
This is by no means a comprehensive list of threats, but is certainly a starting point to be considerate of.
With the above information at hand, it is easy to see why a TSCM inspection requires dedicated, professional and genuinely experienced operatives. The inspection of a single room within an office environment can often take several hours – determined by the threat to the environment, amount of furniture, electronics such as audio-visual equipment, and general clutter.
