DefCon: Hacker Conference Exposes Lax Security Of Companies, Other Hackers

LAS VEGAS — There are so many ways to get hacked at the world’s largest hacker conference.

A hacker could bump against your pocket with a card reader that steals your credit card information. Or a hacker might eavesdrop on your Internet traffic through an unsecured Wi-Fi network. Or a hacker might compromise your cell phone while you charge it in the hotel’s public phone-charging kiosk.

The Internet connection here has been dubbed “the world’s most hostile network.” You might want to avoid the A.T.M.’s, too.

Another case management court appearance has been set for a Garden City businessman and former vice president of the USD 457 Board of Education who is accused of using a concealed camcorder to eavesdrop in the women’s bathroom at his business.

John Scheopner, 56, is charged with four counts of use of a concealed camcorder to eavesdrop and two counts of intimidation of a witness. A case management hearing was held Thursday afternoon, and another is set for 1:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Law Enforcement Center.

Scheopner was arrested June 22 on allegations that on April 30 he used the camcorder to eavesdrop on a 53-year-old Garden City woman, a 28-year-old Lakin woman and a 32-year-old Garden City woman in the women’s bathroom at Scheopner’s Water Conditioning, 2203 East Fulton Plaza.

The two counts of intimidation of a witness or victim stem from Scheopner allegedly attempting to deter the 53-year-old woman and 28-year-old woman from testifying.

Scheopner’s resignation from the school board was accepted May 23 after 14 years on the board.

Microsoft applied for the patent back in 2009, so it’s unlikely it was already preparing for a Skype acquisition two years later, but perhaps it had in mind similar voice messaging software such as Microsoft Voice and Unified Communications.

UK PM David Cameron cuts short Africa trip

LONDON —

British Prime Minister David Cameron is cutting back his trip to Africa even further so he can prepare for an emergency session of Parliament on the phone hacking crisis.

Cameron’s office announced Monday that the trip was being cut short by seven hours. The high-profile resignations are making it harder for Cameron to contain the intensifying scandal on the eve of an unwelcome public grilling by lawmakers for Rupert Murdoch and his son James.

Cameron had had initially intended to spend five days traveling to four countries, including Rwanda and South Sudan.

He had already cut back his trip, dropping stops in Rwanda and South Sudan. He cut back the trip further on Monday.

Vodafone femtocell hack lets intruders listen to calls

Vodafone’s Sure Signal femtocells can be adapted to listen to mobile phone calls and to intercept text messages made by the operator’s customers, according to a group of researchers.

Researchers have claimed Vodafone’s Sure Signal femtocells can be adapted to listen to mobile phone calls and to intercept text messages made by customers.

Intruders can also use the femtocells to hijack a number and make calls and send SMS messages from that number, The Hackers Choice (THC) said on Wednesday.
