I am often asked what training is available across the globe for counter-surveillance service providers. Regrettably, there are far and few between, however, one of a few that we have trained with include Research Electronics International, locate in Tennessee, USA. I have personally undertaken several courses with REI (the first being c. 2004) and have been impressed every time with their facilities and the calibre of their instructors. They take their training seriously and are regularly instructing corporate security advisors, independent consultants and government employees from around the world. I have made some great friends and professional contacts through liaising with classmates whilst on course.
The majority of REI’s instructors are former military, government and/or private sector practitioners. They take their roles very seriously and make an effort to ensure that they know their products.
That said, we occasionally hear criticism of product-based companies, who also provide training. REI sets itself apart, by offering both product-specific training and generic TSCM countermeasures courses. They use a variety of equipment and processes and cover all ends of the training spectrum. REI’s offers ‘situation rooms’ mimicking a hotel, office, residence and other environments.
They also have a comprehensive telephone exchange set-up. displaying scores of known telephone systems and protocols – great for testing their TALAN on!
I’d highly recommend anyone in North America, or anyone eager to do the travel, to attend at least one of REI’s courses, to sharpen-up their skills and craft in detecting bugs or listening devices.
